What in the world is some thinking when they make a dish for a potluck gathering and it is so hot that it makes grown men cry.
Yesterday we had a potluck dinner at our church. Now CAL loves hot things and when he saw peppers and chicken wings together he thought that he had died and gone to heaven. The peppers were pretty big (for peppers) and he took one put it in his mouth and ate it. He said it wasn't that hot while he was chewing it (I asked why he didn't spit it out) but the after effects were horrible.
Again he really enjoys hot things. He gets jalapeno's on his sub along with hot relish.
A few seconds after swallowing the pepper his eye's started to water and sweat started to run down his face. He was sitting at another table and he looked over at me with fear in his eyes. He then ran out of the room. I tried to catch up to him to find out what was wrong - I thought maybe he was going to throw up like he did just outside the doors to Market Basket on Saturday.....
When I found him he was at the water fountain. After I found out what was wrong. I tried to tell him that water would only make it worse but I think in his mind it was cool so that helped. He face was red'er than I had ever seen it. He had quite the following of kids behind him so he didn't cry but I am telling you he wanted to. At one point he stood in the hall way with his hands on his ears screaming for me to help him.
I tried to convince him to go back upstairs and get some bread. Finally he was willing to try anything. I am telling you I thought that he would have blisters around his mouth today, that is how sore his mouth looked.
He went and sat down and ate half a roll. The hotness was starting to subside but now he felt sick to his stomach. He returned to the bathroom to throw up. I tried to tell him that it might make it worse coming back into his mouth a second time.
About an hour later after lots of bread, he appeared to be better. I am just afraid what today or tomorrow might bring when he has recycled that little gem. He may have just found an ingredient for effective weight loss pills. Eat one of these babies before each meal and you will lose weight faster than you could ever imagine.
But again I must ask, what is someone thinking making something like that to bring to a potluck.
Later in the evening, I saw this guy taking tiny little bites of a similar pepper. I asked his wife if he was really eating that and then told her the story of CAL. She said her husband enjoys them but they are so hot that when she cuts them up they blister her fingers.
Today CAL's voice was very scratchy, almost like he had been screaming or had a cold. I am certain that it was from the pepper.

I always thought of a potluck meaning to make something palatable for all tastes. Super hot dishes should be reserved for get togethers where you know the guests well enough that they can handle hot stuff. I'd hate to think that my food made some kid choke, or worse.
