I have to wonder where's the outrage when a woman can murder her husband and two short years later be starting her life over again regaining custody of her children.
Mary Winker was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in 2006. She was sentenced to 3 years in prison but she only spent 12 days.
I understand her defense (the husband was abusive and controlling) but I think she showed very poor judgment in her handling of the case. Exactly how does she get her children back quite so quickly.
We all know that the law is helpless in protecting women from abusive men. But gosh don't we have to at least try. In my mind her first course of action was to kill him.

Curious that the government can seize HUNDREDS of children from the FLDS on a rumor, but in this case hand a murderer her children back. Everyone involved in this ought to be throttled. *mad*
Where's the outrage? Please. Good for her. Let people think twice before they start using someone as their personal punching bag! The usual routine is they go to court, get a restraining order, go straight to the woman, or stalk her for a while, then kill her. Tell you right now, I wouldn't wait twice for some slap happy man to get a second chance.
Also, in this case, it's obvious the only harm the children were in harm of, were from him. People are placing their anger in the wrong direction and punishing the kids.
I personally believe those kids at the FLDS ranch are being used/abused. That being said they should have had a LOT more going into that situation than a anonymous call on a hotline.
This Winkler case has me shaking my head. Let's assume she was abused. She did NOT kill him in self defense. She made a choice and a plan. I think that proves she does not make good decision.
I have heard about families losing their kids for a lot less than this.
Hey don't get me wrong. I am all for a woman sticking up for herself. Especially when it is in self defense.
Abused women have more than just their bodies violated. They have their minds violated also.
I didn't really follow the case all that closely when it was happening but if the best evidence is a costume that he "made" her wear for sex is the best they got then she got the deal of a lifetime.
I don't think I would have had any problem with the "punishment" if she had killed him while he was beating her or the kids. I don't think that was the case.
If this was a man that committed this murder, he would be on death row. Let's be honest. This woman is a murderer. If she was abused, she should get a divorce and take the home and kids and alimony. You might think that I'm simplifying it but it really isn't much more difficult than that. You don't need to take someone's life. I'm outraged!!
The rights of the kids to live with someone that's not a murderer is violated. The grandparents lost a son and now the kids too. Imagine the injustice here. What a shame.
I find some of the comments quite crazy. How often has a woman physically abused her husband and forced him to dress up in costume to fulfill her needs as her sex slave...all while pretending to be the minister's perfect family in public? He belitted her for years and was excessively abusive. Told her she would NEVER escape him or have custody of the children if she divorced him. She did what she felt that she had to do to be rid of him. I wish her and her daughters well. I think she has been without them for too long.
