Working to Rule

The teachers in Nashua are having a contract issue so they are "working to rule". What this basically means is that they arrive with the students, leave with the students, and take nothing home. In their mind (or the unions mind) they need to make parents aware of the "extra" work they do. In my mind it shows just the opposite. They are now working 30 hours a week, receive benefits that no one else in the "business world" receives, and get paid $30,000 to $75,000 per year to work only 9 months. PLUS they really only work 3 weeks and then have a week off for vacations. I know some of you are teachers and you will be very angry at me for this post. To you I apologize "I am sorry" but....... Maybe all teachers should go into "Corporate America" and see what they get. They are not the only people who work for a living. I actually had a teacher say to me "but we have education expense". Yeah???? Teachers think they are the only people who have attended college!
The main issue for our teachers is health care. This seems to be a major issue for everyone. Currently our teachers pay 5% of their health care costs. The city wants them to pay 10%. That is why they are striking, over 5%. Hello in "Corporate America" some of us pay 100% of our health care and we don't have the huge group discounts that you do. Stop crying. Try for one stinking minute to think that the people you are "appealing" to are worse off than you. The same parents that you are "punishing" by working to rule, make much less than you, work more hours, and have 50% to 100% less benefits than you do. Show me any other job that receives the benefits and time off that teachers do.
Last night was our "Open House" This is one of the three after school events that the teachers have to attend. As I have stated several times in the past, I work at the school and know all the teachers. They also know that if they need anything they can ask the Lukie family and we will bend over backwards to get them what they need. We have had teachers approach us for some of the strangest tasks, moving their room around, power washing a storage shed, Christmas presents for a needy family, you name it. I am not bragging. I am just trying to give you an idea of how close I am to the teachers. Yesterday I had several teachers say to me "I'll see you at open house" to which I responded "No I am sorry you won't because I am working to rule" I got some strange looks but no one took me seriously.
Today I had a teacher come into the school store and say to me "Oh my gosh you were serious" I said "What?" The teacher then stated that my son's teacher came to her because we didn't show up for open house. I said "Yeah, I told you I was working to rule" She then started laughing and saying that she didn't think I was serious. YEAH I am serious. Frankly I have to stay home and try to "home school" my son because you are not giving him homework. He has 10 minutes of homework (of course it takes him a hour).
This little rant is getting pretty long and I still have a lot to say so maybe I will start breaking into weekly segments.
