Beverly Police Officer Charged In Deadly Crash
(WBZ) BEVERLY A police officer is facing charges of negligent vehicular homicide in connection with a crash that killed a woman. State police cited Patrolman Stuart Merry on the misdemeanor charge, as well as with speeding, failing to stay within marked lanes and driving without a license.
The January 20th crash killed 61-year-old Bonney Burns, who was sitting in her parked car outside her apartment."He has felt terribly remorseful about this incident," said defense attorney Neil Rossman. Her car was in the path of Merry's out-of-control 2006 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser, which veered across the double-yellow line. The reasons for the crash remain unclear, but police have said in the past that they have experienced unexplained "sudden acceleration" in the cruiser.
"There were several reported incidents in this department in the past by officers of what they described as random acceleration of Ford vehicles," said Beverly Police Chief Mark Ray. The District Attorney's investigation did not find any mechanical problems with Merry's cruiser. Merry has been on paid leave since the crash.
How can a police officer not have a license? He has been on paid leave? PAID? Even if the car malfunctioned, he still didn't have a license. He is still in the wrong. Yet with all the budget issues facing government workers, this guy is on paid leave. Just so all police officers know..... We have all seen you drive.... Who are you trying to kid. Everyone has been passed on the roads by an out of control cop doing 85. They never have their lights on...... Then you wonder why no one has any respect for you.
